A Wild Escape in Bangkok: My Unforgettable Journey to Safari World

Bangkok is a city of endless energy, towering skyscrapers, and golden temples. However, just on the outskirts of this bustling metropolis lies a world where the wild reigns supreme. On my recent trip, I decided to dedicate a full day to Safari World Bangkok, Thailand’s most popular open zoo and leisure park. It wasn't just a visit; it was an immersive experience that brought me face-to-face with the wonders of nature.

Navigating the Journey: From City Lights to the Wild

The journey began early in the morning. Safari World is located about 40 kilometers from the main Bangkok city center. Since there is no direct Metro (MRT/BTS) station right at the park gates, I decided to mix public transport with local commutes to experience the city like a local.

My route was a bit of an adventure itself:

  1. Bike Taxi to Metro: I started with a quick bike taxi ride to the nearest station.

  2. The Green & Pink Lines: I boarded the Green Line and later transitioned to the newly opened Pink Line, which took me through different suburban landscapes of Bangkok.

  3. The Final Stretch: After getting off at the nearest station to the park, I hopped on another bike taxi. Feeling the morning breeze as we zipped through the final kilometers was the perfect prelude to the day.

    Ishabil Fact

    • The Location: Safari World is situated roughly 40 kilometers outside the main Bangkok city center, providing a massive open environment for the animals away from urban congestion.
    • A Huge Herd: The park plays host to a massive herd of giraffes roaming together, which is recognized as one of the largest assembled giraffe herds in the entire world.
    • Two Parks in One: The complex is distinctly divided into two experiences: the Marine Park, which features pedestrian walk-through exhibits and coordinated animal shows, and the Safari Park, which is a completely open savannah.

    Ishabil Tips

    • Smart Transit Combo: To save on budget and completely bypass Bangkok's notorious highway gridlock, take the Green Metro Line, transition to the newly opened Pink Line, and take a nimble bike taxi for the final stretch to the park gates.
    • Timing is Key: Plan to arrive at the gates by 9:00 AM or at least by 10:00 AM. This ensures you snag prime front-row seats for the morning show lineup, starting with the Orangutans.
    • Comfort First: Expect plenty of moving between outdoor venues. Wear highly breathable cotton clothing and sturdy, comfortable walking shoes to handle the day easily.

Morning Spectacles at Marine Park

I arrived at the gates at exactly 10:05 AM, just in time for the first show of the day. Safari World is divided into two main sections: Marine Park (which hosts the shows and walk-through exhibits) and the Safari Park (the open zoo).

1. The Orangutan Boxing Show

My first stop was the Orangutan show. I managed to snag a seat right at the front. Watching these incredibly intelligent primates perform was a mix of awe and laughter. From their humorous boxing skits to their acrobatic swings, the Orangutans proved why they are considered some of the smartest creatures on Earth.

2. Elephant Wonders

At 11:00 AM, I headed to the Elephant Show. Seeing these gentle giants perform was breathtaking. They demonstrated incredible coordination—playing football, dancing, and even painting intricate designs with their trunks. It was a testament to the deep bond between the animals and their trainers.

3. High-Octane Spy War

By 11:45 AM, it was time for some adrenaline. The Spy War Show is a live-action stunt spectacle. With massive explosions, jet ski chases, and actors performing daring stunts, it felt like being on a Hollywood movie set. The heat from the pyrotechnics and the splashing water kept everyone on the edge of their seats.

A Gastronomic Break at Blossom Restaurant

After a morning full of excitement, I headed to Blossom Restaurant for a buffet lunch. The spread was impressive, featuring a variety of international cuisines and traditional Thai flavors. It was the perfect opportunity to refuel and relax before the afternoon activities.

The excitement continued after lunch with the Dolphin Show at 1:45 PM and the Sea Lion Show at 2:00 PM. The grace of the dolphins and the playful antics of the sea lions added a splash of joy to the afternoon.

The Safari Park: Into the Wild

At 3:00 PM, it was time for the highlight of the day: the Safari Park. Unlike traditional zoos where animals are in cages, here, the humans are in the "cage"—a fully air-conditioned bus.

As the bus drove through the massive gates, the scenery changed instantly into a vast savannah.

  • The Big Cats: We drove past majestic tigers and lions lounging in the shade. Seeing their power from just a glass pane away was humbling.

  • The Long-Necks: A massive herd of giraffes—perhaps one of the largest in the world—approached the area, their long necks reaching for the treetops.

  • The Plains: Groups of zebras and antelopes grazed peacefully, while crocodiles lurked silently in nearby water bodies.

It felt like a slice of Africa in the heart of Thailand. The freedom these animals had to roam in a natural habitat was beautiful to witness.

The Journey Home: Closing the Chapter

Before leaving, I headed back into the park for one last memory: a photo and video session with the great apes. It was a heartwarming way to end the visit.

I took a bike taxi back to the Metro station, stopping briefly at a local supermarket to pick up some Thai chocolates for friends and family. From there, it was a straight run to the airport. Although my flight was delayed by an hour, I eventually landed in Kochi at 11:30 PM.

The final leg of my journey involved an auto-rickshaw to Angamaly and a Fast Passenger bus to my hometown. As I finally reached home, the sights of the tigers, the laughter of the shows, and the rhythm of Bangkok were still fresh in my mind.
