Oorakam: The Village Nestled in the Folds of Malappuram

Located in the verdant landscapes of the Malappuram district, Oorakam Grama Panchayat is a region defined by its stunning topography and rich history. Situated within the Tirurangadi Taluk and the Malappuram Block, this scenic village covers an area of 21.65 square kilometers.

From its lush paddy fields to its historic hills, Oorakam offers a glimpse into the serene village life of Kerala.

Geography and Topography

Oorakam represents the quintessential beauty of the Kerala countryside. Historically part of the western edge of the old Eranad Taluk, the panchayat is geographically situated between the Kadalundi River and the imposing Oorakam Hill (Oorakam Mala).

The landscape is a mesmerizing blend of diverse terrains:

Steep Slopes & Hills: The region is marked by high hill ranges and steep slopes.

Laterite Terrain: Large sections of the land feature laterite-rich hills (Chenkallu).

Waterbodies: Crystal-clear streams flow down from the mountain ranges, feeding into the agricultural lands below. The Kadalundi River flows majestically along the southern border of the panchayat towards the west.

Agriculture: The valleys are adorned with lush green paddy fields that look like a carpet of green silk spread across the land.

Etymology and History

The name "Oorakam" is believed to be derived from the unique geography of the area. It is thought to come from the concept of a "village lying inside the folds of the hills" (Malamadakkukalkkakath kidanna ooru).

A History of Wilderness

Centuries ago, this region was a dense forest and a thriving habitat for wildlife. The legacy of this wild past is preserved in the local place names found throughout the panchayat:

Karimpili

Pannippara (Pig Rock)

Mullan Madakkal (Porcupine Ridge)

Aanakallu (Elephant Stone)

While the dense forests have receded, the Oorakam Hill is still home to a rare population of monkeys, the last remnants of the area's wildlife heritage.

The Warrior’s Hideout

Oorakam Hill holds historical significance beyond its natural beauty. In ancient times, the rugged terrain and caves of the hill served as secure hideouts for warriors during times of conflict.

Administrative Profile

The Oorakam Grama Panchayat officially came into existence on December 20, 1963. It comprises the villages of Oorakam, Melmuri, and Keezhmuri.

Boundaries

The panchayat shares its borders with several prominent local bodies, making it a central hub in the district:

North: Morayur and Kondotty Municipality.

South: Othukkungal and Parappur Panchayats.

East: Malappuram Municipality and Othukkungal Panchayat.

West: Vengara and Kannamangalam Panchayats.

Conclusion

Today, Oorakam stands as a beautiful blend of highlands, plains, and wetlands. With its deep-rooted history reflected in its place names and its borders defined by the flowing Kadalundi River, Oorakam remains a culturally and geographically significant village in Malappuram.

Early Entrepreneurship in Kerala My professional life began right at home. Even during my student years, I spent my free time working at my father's shop. The Safari World Bangkok "Price Hack": Why You Should Never Buy Tickets at the Counter.

If you are planning a trip to Bangkok,  Safari World  is likely at the top of your list. Spanning hundreds of Irish-green acres, it is divided into two main parts: the Safari Park (where you drive through the animal habitats) and the Marine Park (where the shows and walking exhibits are located).2 However, there is a "tourist trap" waiting for you right at the entrance gate: the ticket counter. The Shocking Price Gap: Counter vs. Online Many travelers assume that buying tickets at the gate is the most straightforward way to visit. In reality, it is the most expensive. At the Counter: A standard combo ticket for a non-Thai resident (Safari Park + Marine Park) usually costs around 1,500 THB . If you want the International Buffet Lunch, you often have to pay an additional fee, bringing the total cost closer to 1,800–2,000 THB . On Trip.com / Klook / Trazy: These pla...
