Have you ever looked at a long layover on a flight ticket and felt tired just thinking about it? Most travelers see a 10-hour wait at an airport as a burden. But for me, it is a "Golden Ticket."
Working in Saudi Arabia while having my home in India gives me a unique opportunity. Every time I fly between Jeddah and Kozhikode, I turn a simple transit into a mini-vacation. This is called Stopover Tourism.
What is Stopover Tourism?
Stopover tourism is when you intentionally choose a flight with a long layover (usually 8 to 96 hours) to explore a new city before continuing to your final destination. Many airlines and countries now offer easy visas and transport to encourage this.
The Benefits:
Two Countries, One Ticket: You visit a new country without buying a separate round-trip ticket.
Cost-Efficient: Many airlines offer free or discounted transit visas.
Beat Travel Fatigue: Instead of sitting on a cold airport chair, you can sleep in a hotel or walk through a beautiful city.
Low Budget: Since you are only there for a few hours, you don't need much luggage or a huge budget.
My Personal Journey: From Dubai to Muscat
Over the years, I have mastered the art of the stopover. Here is how I explored the Middle East one layover at a time.
2014: The Dubai Discovery (Emirates Airlines)
On my way back to Saudi Arabia, I booked a flight with a 12-hour stopover in Dubai.
The Visa: I got a 96-hour tourist visa through Emirates at a very low price.
The Experience: I used the Dubai Metro, which is the most affordable way to see the city. I visited the iconic Burj Khalifa, watched the Dubai Fountain, and explored the Dubai Aquarium and Mall of the Emirates.
The Personal Touch: I took a bus to Ajman to visit my friend Sameer. He was kind enough to drop me back at the airport to catch my flight to Jeddah.
2023: The $10 Doha Adventure (Qatar Airways)
Last year, I took a 10-hour stopover in Doha.
The Visa: Because I am a Saudi resident, I received my visa free of charge.
The Budget: This was my cheapest trip ever. I bought a 6 QR (approx. $1.60) day pass for the Doha Metro.
The Experience: I visited the Lusail Stadium, Katara Cultural Village, and the Museum of Islamic Art. I also walked along the Doha Corniche and did some window shopping at Villaggio Mall. I spent less than $10 in total and saw the entire heart of Qatar.
2025: The Scenic Muscat Stop (Oman Air)
Recently, flying from Jeddah to Kozhikode, I chose Muscat for a 10-hour stay.
The Visa: I applied for an online visa for only 5 OMR.
The Experience: Using local buses, I visited the stunning Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and the Al Alam Palace. My favorite part was the Mutrah Fort; the view from the top is incredible, overlooking the sea and the Mutrah Souk. I finished my day in the Ruwi area before taking a bus back to the airport.
A Bonus Tip: The "Multi-City" Trick in Egypt
Sometimes, you don't even need a "layover" ticket. In 2024, I created my own stopover in Egypt.
I flew Jeddah to Cairo on Flyadeal for only 249 SR.
2 After two days of exploring Cairo, I flew Cairo to Kozhikode via Riyadh on Flynas for 700 SR.
By booking two separate low-cost tickets, I saw the Pyramids and reached home for under 1,000 SR!
Conclusion
Stopover tourism has changed the way I travel. I have seen the world's tallest buildings, historic forts, and beautiful beaches, all while simply "going home." Next time you book a flight from India to Saudi Arabia, don’t look for the shortest flight—look for the most interesting stopover!
