A Journey Through the Clouds: From the Valleys of Attappadi to the Serenity of Isha
The route from Malappuram to Coimbatore via Attappadi has long been on our travel bucket list. It is a path that promises a transition from the lush greenery of Kerala to the rugged mountains of the Western Ghats, finally opening into the plains of Tamil Nadu. Recently, we finally set out to experience this scenic corridor firsthand.
Climbing the Ghats
Our journey began early in the morning, passing through the familiar bustling towns of Perinthalmanna and Mannarkkad . As we veered off toward the Attappadi forest range, the transition was immediate. The roads initially challenged us with their rough patches, but the anticipation of the climb kept our spirits high.
Before tackling the steep hairpins of the ghat road, we stopped at a small local eatery for breakfast. While the meal didn't quite live up to our expectations, the bill certainly did—a reminder that in remote tourist corridors, prices often climb as high as the mountains!
As we ascended the winding ghat road, the air grew cooler and the views more expansive. We found a safe spot to pull over and take in the panoramic vista of the valleys below. Interestingly, we weren't alone; a troop of monkeys (our "little friends" of the mountain) greeted us. Watching their playful antics against the backdrop of the misty peaks was the perfect way to recharge before continuing our drive through the clouds.
The Serene Banks of the Bhavani
Descending into the flatter plateau of Attappadi, the landscape shifted into a peaceful countryside dotted with small houses. One of the highlights of this stretch was stopping by the Bhavani River .
There is something poetic about the Bhavani; it is one of only three rivers in Kerala that flows east, originating in the Western Ghats before crossing into Tamil Nadu to join the Kaveri. Standing on its banks, we watched cattle grazing in the lush greenery near the water. The sight of the flowing river set against the towering mountain ranges felt like a living painting.
As we drove further, passing through local hubs like Goolikkadavu and Kottathara , we recognized several locations made famous by the Malayalam film Ayyappanum Koshiyum . The rugged, raw beauty of the terrain explained exactly why filmmakers find this region so captivating.
Crossing into Tamil Nadu
Before hitting the border at Anakkatti , we stopped to refresh ourselves with tender coconuts from a roadside vendor—the perfect remedy for the afternoon sun.
The moment we crossed into Tamil Nadu, the change in infrastructure was noticeable. The roads became smoother and wider, though the traffic remained pleasantly sparse. The drive through the Tamilian villages was a highlight in itself, offering glimpses of vast agricultural lands and a slower, quieter pace of life.
The Grandeur of Isha: Adiyogi
Our primary destination was the Isha Yoga Center . As we approached, the majestic 112-foot-tall statue of Adiyogi (Lord Shiva) rose into view, framed by the Velliangiri Mountains.
-
The Statue: Recognized as the largest bust sculpture in the world, the Adiyogi statue is a feat of engineering and art. Standing before it, one feels a profound sense of scale and stillness. It represents the first yogi who transmitted the science of Yoga to humanity.
-
The Experience: We spent a significant amount of time exploring the grounds. The atmosphere is thick with a unique blend of architectural discipline and spiritual calm. The black steel of the statue reflects the changing light of the sky, making it look different from every angle.
-
The Vibe: Whether you are there for meditation or simply to admire the aesthetics, the center offers a peaceful retreat from the chaos of daily life.
A Flavorful Finale in Coimbatore
As evening approached, we headed into Coimbatore city . No modern trip to the city is complete without a stop at Lulu Hypermarket , where we spent some time exploring the massive aisles and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.
Of course, a trip to this region is incomplete without sampling the local cuisine. On our way back, we stopped at a restaurant and ordered their specialty Mushroom Dosa . It was perfectly crisp, flavorful, and exactly what we needed after a long day of exploring. It was a far cry from our breakfast experience earlier in the day!
Heading Home
The return journey took us through Palakkad , the "Gateway of Kerala." The night drive was smooth, and we finally reached home around midnight.
This tour was more than just a drive; it was a beautiful loop that connected the high-altitude forests of Attappadi with the spiritual landmarks of Coimbatore. It left us with a gallery of memories—from the playful monkeys on the ghats to the towering silhouette of Adiyogi against the evening sky.
