KL Sentral Station Guide: Every Rail Line, Airport Transfer, and Bus Connection Explained

If you are planning a trip to Kuala Lumpur without spending a fortune on taxis or Grab rides, there is one place you need to know better than anywhere else: KL Sentral (Stesen Sentral Kuala Lumpur). Located just southwest of the city center in the lively Brickfields neighborhood, KL Sentral is the biggest and busiest public transport hub in Malaysia. Every single day, hundreds of thousands of locals and tourists pass through its doors to catch airport trains, city metros, intercity rails, and express buses.

I still remember the exact moment I first arrived at KL Sentral. After landing at KLIA Terminal 2 (klia2), we decided to skip the expensive airport taxi and hopped on a RM 15 airport express bus instead. One hour later, our bus drove down a ramp into a concrete underground terminal packed with bright red coaches. We stepped off the bus at the KL Sentral Basement Bus Hub (Level G), looked up at a giant set of escalators, and realized we were standing inside a massive multi-level transit city!

Over the next few days, KL Sentral became our home base for everything. From that exact same basement bus bay, we caught the Go Genting (GO KL / Genting Express) bus straight up to Genting Highlands. When we came back down from the mountains, we walked up to the main hall and took the KTM Komuter train to Batu Caves. After returning from Batu Caves, we jumped right onto the LRT Kelana Jaya Line to see the Petronas Twin Towers at KLCC. And at the end of our trip, we came right back to KL Sentral to ride back to KLIA2 for our flight home.

Why do so many first-time visitors get confused inside KL Sentral? Because the station is spread across several stacked floors and connected to the huge Nu Sentral Shopping Mall, luxury hotels (Hilton and Le Méridien), and overhead bridges. Even worse, two of the most useful metro lines—the MRT Kajang Line and the KL Monorail—are hidden at the end of indoor walkways outside the main hall!

In this complete guide on ishabil.com, I will walk you through KL Sentral floor by floor using both official station data and my real-life experience on the ground. To understand the station right away, just picture four simple zones:

  • 1. Level G (Basement Bus Hub): The lowest level under the Nu Sentral escalators where airport buses from KLIA1/KLIA2 and express buses to Genting Highlands arrive and depart.
  • 2. Level 1 (Main Transit Concourse): The giant main floor where you board the LRT Kelana Jaya Line, KTM Komuter trains (to Batu Caves and Port Klang), KLIA Ekspres, and KLIA Transit.
  • 3. Level 2 (ETS Lounge, LRT Boarding & Linkways): The upper floor for long-distance KTM ETS high-speed trains, hotel exits, luggage lockers, and upper LRT gates.
  • 4. The Two Pedestrian Bridges (Nu Sentral & Muzium Negara): Elevated walkways from Level 2—one going south through Nu Sentral Mall to the KL Monorail, and one going north through an air-conditioned tunnel to the MRT Kajang Line.

🚄 Ishabil Fact: How Big is KL Sentral Really?

Opened on April 16, 2001, to replace the old colonial Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, Stesen Sentral Kuala Lumpur was designed by famous Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. The entire KL Sentral development covers 72 acres (built over old train repair yards) and connects 8 different rail services (Lines 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, plus long-distance ETS trains). Although built to handle 100,000 passengers a day, it now serves well over 200,000 daily commuters and travelers.

Understanding KL Sentral's Layout (Floor-by-Floor Orientation)

When you step off a bus or train at KL Sentral, do not rush. Your first step is simply to check which floor you are standing on. Because the land around Brickfields sits on a small hill, different doors lead to different floors. Here is how the three main levels work from bottom to top.

Level G: The Basement Bus Hub (Where My Trip Started!)

When our bus from KLIA2 pulled into KL Sentral, it dropped us right here on Level G. This is an underground bus bay located directly beneath the giant southern escalators that lead up to Nu Sentral Mall. It isn't fancy—just concrete pillars, numbered bus bays, and small glass ticket booths—but it is super practical. From this exact floor, you can buy tickets and board budget airport coaches (SkyBus, Aerobus, Suasana Edaran) to KLIA T1 and KLIA2, as well as the express bus to Genting Highlands. To enter the main train station from Level G, just walk to the middle of the bus bay and ride the escalator up one floor to Level 1.

Level 1: The Main Concourse (LRT, KTM Komuter & Airport Trains)

Level 1 is the giant main walkway of KL Sentral. When you come up the escalator from the Level G bus hub, you are standing at the southern end of Level 1. As you walk straight ahead through the bright concourse, everything is laid out cleanly on your left, center, and right:

  • Center of Level 1 (LRT Concourse): Right in the middle of the floor are the ticket machines and entry gates for the LRT Kelana Jaya Line (Line 5)—the exact line we used to reach KLCC.
  • East Wing of Level 1 (KTM Hall): On the eastern side of the main hall, you will see the blue-and-yellow signs for KTM Komuter Line 1 and Line 2—where we boarded our direct train to Batu Caves.
  • North-West Wing of Level 1 (ERL Airport Hall): On the western side sit the sleek purple and teal gates for the high-speed KLIA Ekspres (Line 6) and KLIA Transit (Line 7) airport trains.

Level 2: ETS Intercity Lounge, Lockers & Pedestrian Bridges

Take the escalator up one more floor from the center of Level 1 and you will reach Level 2. Here you will find the waiting hall and boarding gates for long-distance KTM ETS high-speed trains (going to Ipoh, Penang, and the Thai border), a casual food court, prayer rooms (Surau), and coin/digital luggage lockers. More importantly, Level 2 has the two indoor bridges that connect KL Sentral to the rest of the city: walk North past the Hilton hotel entrance for the MRT Kajang Line, or walk South up the wide escalators into Nu Sentral Mall for the KL Monorail.

Urban Rail Lines: Getting Around Kuala Lumpur (LRT, MRT & Monorail)

When you want to visit downtown Kuala Lumpur sights like the Petronas Twin Towers (KLCC), Chinatown (Pasar Seni), or Bukit Bintang, you will use one of the three Rapid KL urban rail lines. All three lines accept the exact same payments: a Touch 'n Go card, a plastic Single Journey Token from the ticket vending machines, or an unlimited MyCity Pass (Rapid Kembara Pass).

1. LRT Kelana Jaya Line (Line 5) – How We Reached KLCC in 12 Minutes

After we came back to KL Sentral from our morning trip to Batu Caves, we wanted to go straight to the Petronas Twin Towers at KLCC. The easiest and fastest way to do this is on the pink LRT Kelana Jaya Line (Line 5). Because the LRT platforms sit right inside the middle of the KL Sentral building on Level 1 and Level 2, it took us less than three minutes to walk from the KTM Komuter exit to the LRT ticket gates!

  • Operating Hours & Frequency: Trains run daily from 6:00 AM to 11:50 PM. Because the trains are driverless and computer-controlled, they arrive every 3 to 5 minutes during peak hours.
  • Going to Chinatown & KLCC (Toward Gombak): Make sure you board the platform heading toward Gombak. You will reach Pasar Seni (for Chinatown, Petaling Street, and Central Market) in just 1 stop, historic Masjid Jamek in 2 stops (where you can transfer seamlessly to the LRT Ampang & Sri Petaling Lines), and KLCC in 5 stops (~12 minutes, RM 2.40), followed by Ampang Park. When we got off at KLCC, the exit led straight into the air-conditioned basement of Suria KLCC Mall right below the Twin Towers!
  • Going Toward Subang & PJ (Toward Putra Heights): The opposite platform heads west and south through Bangsar, Abdullah Hukum (connected to Mid Valley & The Gardens Mall), Petaling Jaya, Glenmarie (interchange for the LRT Shah Alam Line / Line 11 toward Klang), and Subang Jaya.

2. MRT Kajang Line (Line 9 via Muzium Negara Station) – Step-by-Step Walking Guide

Many visitors look for an MRT sign inside the Level 1 concourse and get confused when they cannot find one. That is because the dark green MRT Kajang Line (Line 9) stops at Muzium Negara Station (National Museum) right next door. Don't worry—you do not have to walk outside in the hot sun!

How to walk to the MRT Kajang Line from KL Sentral (4 to 5 minutes):

  1. From the Level 1 main concourse, take the middle escalators or lift up to Level 2.
  2. Look for the green signs that say "MRT Muzium Negara" near the exit doors for the Hilton Kuala Lumpur and Le Méridien hotels.
  3. Walk into the 200-meter air-conditioned indoor pedestrian linkway. It has flat moving walkways (travellators) and escalators that take you directly down to the underground ticket gates of Muzium Negara MRT Station.

Where the MRT takes you: Heading east toward Kajang, it stops at Pasar Seni, Merdeka (next to Merdeka 118), Bukit Bintang (right in front of Pavilion KL Mall and Jalan Alor Night Market), and Tun Razak Exchange (TRX). Heading northwest toward Kwasa Damansara, it connects you to Damansara and TTDI.

🔗 Ishabil Connect: Why the MRT Linkway Beats the Monorail for Heavy Suitcases

If your hotel is in Bukit Bintang, you can take either the MRT Kajang Line (Line 9) or the KL Monorail (Line 8) from KL Sentral. However, if you just arrived from KLIA2 with rolling luggage, always choose the MRT via Muzium Negara! The indoor bridge on Level 2 has wide elevators and flat moving walkways, and the underground MRT trains are huge. Even better, if you ride the MRT one stop past Bukit Bintang to Tun Razak Exchange (TRX), you can walk right across the platform to board the yellow MRT Putrajaya Line (Line 12)!

3. KL Monorail (Line 8 via Nu Sentral Mall) – Step-by-Step Mall Walk-Through

The light green KL Monorail (Line 8) runs on an elevated track high above the streets of Kuala Lumpur. Its station is attached to the far side of Nu Sentral Shopping Mall.

How to reach the KL Monorail without getting lost (5 minutes):

  1. From the Level 1 main concourse of KL Sentral, walk south toward the huge escalators leading up into Nu Sentral Mall (right above the Level G bus hub).
  2. Ride the escalators up into the mall bridge and walk 300 meters straight ahead through the main air-conditioned corridor on Level 1 of Nu Sentral Mall. Follow the overhead signs with the train icon past the shops.
  3. Walk out the glass doors at the far end of the mall onto the covered overhead bridge above Jalan Tun Sambanthan in Brickfields, which brings you directly to the Monorail ticket gates.

Where the Monorail goes: It stops at Maharajalela, Hang Tuah (interchange with the Ampang and Sri Petaling LRT lines), Imbi (right inside Berjaya Times Square Mall), Bukit Bintang, Raja Chulan, Bukit Nanas, Medan Tuanku, Chow Kit, and ends at Titiwangsa.

Suburban & Intercity Trains: KTM Komuter (To Batu Caves) & ETS

Operated by Malaysia's national railway company (KTMB), the commuter and high-speed trains at KL Sentral take you beyond the city center to famous temples, coastal port towns, and northern states like Penang and Perak.

KTM Komuter train arriving at Batu Caves station direct from KL Sentral
The KTM Komuter train is the most direct and budget-friendly way to reach Batu Caves from KL Sentral.

1. KTM Komuter Line 1 (Batu Caves – Pulau Sebang): My Experience Riding to Batu Caves

After we returned from Genting Highlands, our next big stop was Batu Caves to see the giant golden statue of Lord Murugan and climb the 272 rainbow steps. Taking a taxi in city traffic can be pricey, so we used KTM Komuter Line 1 (Batu Caves – Pulau Sebang Line) right from the Level 1 East Wing (KTM Hall) at KL Sentral—and it was super easy!

  • Our Ride to Batu Caves: We walked over to the KTM Komuter gates on Level 1, tapped our Touch 'n Go cards (you can also buy a QR ticket on the KTMB KITS App or use a Komuter Link card), and went down to the platform for Batu Caves. The train is big, clean, and air-conditioned with plenty of seats. Passing through Bank Negara and Putra, we reached the final stop, Batu Caves Station, in right around 30 minutes for just RM 2.60 one-way! From the station exit, you simply walk two minutes along the path straight into the temple complex.
  • Southbound Route (Toward Pulau Sebang / Tampin): Going in the opposite direction, Line 1 stops at Mid Valley (1 stop away), Bandar Tasik Selatan (TBS Bus Terminal), Kajang, Seremban, and ends at Pulau Sebang/Tampin near Melaka.

💡 Ishabil Tips: Don't Get Stuck Waiting 60 Minutes at Batu Caves!

Here is the most important lesson we learned when taking the KTM Komuter to Batu Caves: unlike the LRT or MRT which come every 3 minutes, KTM Komuter trains only run every 30 to 60 minutes because of ongoing track upgrade works! As soon as you step off the train at Batu Caves, take a photo of the return departure timetable posted near the station gate (or check the live schedule on the KTMB KITS App). That way, when we finished exploring the caves, we walked back to the station 10 minutes before the train departed and rode straight back to KL Sentral to catch the LRT to KLCC without wasting an hour on the platform!

2. KTM Komuter Line 2 (Tanjung Malim – Klang – Pelabuhan Klang / Port Klang)

Also boarding from the Level 1 East Wing (KTM Hall), KTM Komuter Line 2 (Tanjung Malim – Port Klang Line) connects Tanjung Malim in the north through KL Sentral and out west to the coast. Heading west from KL Sentral, the train stops at Abdullah Hukum, Subang Jaya, Shah Alam, and the royal town of Klang (an intermediate stop on the main line famous for heritage streets and traditional food), before ending at Pelabuhan Klang (Port Klang)—right next to the ferry jetty for day trips to Pulau Ketam (Crab Island).

✈️ Ishabil Fact: Warning About the Suspended Subang Airport Train (Line 10)

If you look at older transit maps online, you will see a brown line called the KTM Skypark Link (Line 10) going from KL Sentral to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Subang Airport). Please remember that the KTM Subang Skypark train line is currently suspended! If you have a flight from Subang Airport, do not wait in the KTM hall. Instead, take a Rapid KL bus or ride the LRT Kelana Jaya Line to Ara Damansara / Glenmarie and take a short 10-minute ride to the terminal.

3. KTM ETS (Electric Train Service) – High-Speed Trains to Ipoh & Penang

Want to visit Ipoh, Taiping, Butterworth (Penang Sentral for the ferry to George Town), or Padang Besar on the Thailand border? You will board the fast KTM ETS train from the Level 2 Waiting Hall.

  • How to Book: You cannot use a Touch 'n Go card for ETS trains. Every passenger needs a pre-booked seat ticket with a QR code, which you can buy online via the KTMB KITS App or at the Level 2 ticket kiosks.
  • Boarding Gate Timing: Arrive on Level 2 at least 30 minutes early. The automated QR gates open 30 minutes before departure and lock shut 5 to 10 minutes before the train leaves.

Complete Bus Guide at KL Sentral (My KLIA2 & Genting Highlands Experience)

For budget-smart travelers, the Level G Basement Bus Hub underneath KL Sentral is an absolute goldmine. During our trip, we used this exact bus terminal to travel from KLIA2 to KL Sentral, to take the bus up to Genting Highlands, and to return from KL Sentral to KLIA2 at the end of our holiday! Here is everything you need to know about all the buses at KL Sentral.

Level G Basement Bus Hub at KL Sentral for budget express buses to KLIA and Genting Highlands
Level G is your go-to spot for affordable airport buses and the Go Genting express coach.

1. Airport Express Buses: How I Traveled Between KLIA2 and KL Sentral for RM 15

When we landed at KLIA2, we looked at the RM 55 per person train fare and decided to take the Airport Express Bus instead—and honestly, it was so comfortable that we took the exact same bus back to KLIA2 when our trip ended!

  • Where to Board at KL Sentral: Walk to the southern side of Level 1 (right in front of the wide escalators going up to Nu Sentral Mall) and take the smaller escalator down to Level G (Basement Bus Hub).
  • Bus Operators, Price & Travel Time: Trusted operators like SkyBus, Aerobus, and Suasana Edaran run nonstop coaches between KL Sentral and both KLIA Terminal 1 and KLIA2 every 20 to 30 minutes. A one-way ticket costs only ~RM 15, and the ride takes about 55 to 75 minutes on the highway. The seats recline nicely and there is plenty of luggage storage underneath the bus.
  • How to Buy Tickets: You can walk right up to the ticket counter booths or automated kiosks in Level G and buy a ticket for the very next bus, or book ahead on RedBus or Easybook.

2. Taking the Bus from KL Sentral to Genting Highlands (Go Genting Express)

One of the highlights of our trip was heading up to Genting Highlands from KL Sentral. Many travelers call it the "GO KL to Genting bus" or the Go Genting Express Bus, and it departs from the exact same Level G Basement Bus Hub where our KLIA2 bus dropped us off!

Red Go Genting express bus transporting passengers from KL Sentral to Genting Highlands
The Go Genting Express bus offers a comfortable ride up to the Awana SkyWay cable car.
  • How the Journey Works: Down on Level G, walk to the red Go Genting ticket counter or digital kiosk (or book online on RedBus/Easybook). The express bus drives ~1 hour from KL Sentral up the mountain highway to Awana Bus Terminal.
  • The Awana SkyWay Cable Car Bundle: When you buy your bus ticket at KL Sentral, ask for the Bus + Awana SkyWay Cable Car combo ticket (~RM 20 to RM 21 one-way). Once our bus arrived at Awana Bus Terminal, we simply rode the escalators upstairs inside the building and hopped straight onto the glass-floored gondola cable car over the rainforest to the top of Genting Highlands! When we finished exploring, we rode the cable car back down to Awana and took the return bus right back to KL Sentral Level G.

💡 Ishabil Tips: Don't Confuse "Go Genting Express" with the "GoKL City Bus"!

First-time visitors often mix up the names because both start with "Go"! Remember: the Go Genting Express Bus (in the Level G Basement) is the long-distance mountain coach that goes up to Genting Highlands (~RM 10 for the bus, or ~RM 21 with the cable car). Meanwhile, the GoKL City Bus (Red Line) is a pink downtown city bus that stops at the Level 1 street-level bus bay and loops around central Kuala Lumpur! Also, be sure to buy your Genting Highlands bus ticket at least 1 day early if you want a morning departure between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM, as those seats sell out fast!

3. GoKL City Bus (Red Line), Rapid KL Stage Buses & KL Hop-On Hop-Off

If you want to take a city bus around downtown Kuala Lumpur, head to the street-level bus bays on Level 1 or outside Nu Sentral Mall on Jalan Tun Sambanthan:

  • GoKL Red Line: Starts at KL Sentral and visits Muzium Negara, Masjid Negara (National Mosque), Dataran Merdeka, Sogo Mall, and Chow Kit. It is free for Malaysian citizens (with MyKad) and costs just RM 1.00 for foreign tourists (payable by QR, Touch 'n Go, or contactless card).
  • Rapid KL Stage Buses: Local routes toward Bangsar, Mid Valley, and Petaling Jaya stop along Brickfields outside Nu Sentral. No cash is accepted—tap your Touch 'n Go card when getting on and off.
  • KL Hop-On Hop-Off Sightseeing Bus: The open-top tourist double-decker bus stops at Stop #6 on the upper hotel driveway right near the Hilton Kuala Lumpur entrance (Level 2 North).

Airport Rail Links: KLIA Ekspres vs. KLIA Transit (When You Are in a Hurry)

While we loved taking the RM 15 bus between KLIA2 and KL Sentral to save money, what if you are running late for your flight or landing during heavy evening rush-hour traffic? That is when you should use the high-speed airport trains on the North-West Wing of Level 1.

1. KLIA Ekspres (Line 6 - ERL) – Non-Stop to KLIA1 & KLIA2

Colored purple on station signs, the KLIA Ekspres (Line 6) travels non-stop from KL Sentral to KLIA Terminal 1 in 28 minutes and KLIA Terminal 2 (klia2) in 33 minutes. Trains leave every 20 minutes and cost ~RM 55 one-way. You can pay with a QR Ticket (10% cheaper if bought online via the official KLIA Ekspres website), tap any Contactless Bank Card (Visa/Mastercard) straight at the gate, tap your Touch 'n Go card, or bundle your airport train ride with unlimited city metro rides using the KL TravelPass.

2. KLIA Transit (Line 7 - ERL) – Best for TBS Bus Terminal & Putrajaya

Boarding from the shared ERL concourse on Level 1, the teal-colored KLIA Transit (Line 7) stops at three stations before reaching KLIA T1 and KLIA2: Bandar Tasik Selatan (TBS) (only 7 minutes away—the best way to catch long-distance buses to Melaka or Singapore), Putrajaya & Cyberjaya (for the Pink Mosque and interchange with the MRT Putrajaya Line), and Salak Tinggi.

🔗 Ishabil Connect: Airport Bus (RM 15) vs. KLIA Ekspres Train (RM 55) — Which Should You Pick?

Having taken the KLIA2 to KL Sentral bus both ways on my trip, here is my honest rule of thumb: If you are traveling as a couple, family, or budget traveler and you have at least 3 hours before your flight, take the Level G Airport Express Bus for RM 15—for two people, you save RM 80 each way! However, if you are traveling between 4:30 PM and 7:00 PM on a rainy weekday when highway traffic crawls, or if you want a cheaper train trick, take the KLIA Transit train and hop off/on at Putrajaya & Cyberjaya with your Touch 'n Go card to cut the train fare from RM 55 down to RM 23.40!

Ticketing, Touch 'n Go Cards & Station Facilities

Having a Touch 'n Go (TnG) card in your pocket makes using KL Sentral ten times easier. With one card, we tapped seamlessly onto the KTM Komuter to Batu Caves and the LRT Kelana Jaya Line to KLCC without queuing at ticket machines.

Where to Buy & Reload Touch 'n Go Cards & Rail Passes at KL Sentral

  • Touch 'n Go Hub (Nu Sentral Mall Level 2): Walk into Nu Sentral Mall and go up one floor to Level 2 to visit the official TnG showroom. Here you can buy the Enhanced NFC Touch 'n Go Card (RM 10), which lets you reload money straight from your smartphone using the TnG eWallet app.
  • LRT Customer Service Booth (Level 1 Center): Right beside the LRT Kelana Jaya gates; you can buy standard TnG cards, load cash onto your card, or activate unlimited travel passes—including the Rapid KL MyCity / Rapid Kembara Pass (1-Day, 2-Day, or 3-Day unlimited rides on LRT, MRT, Monorail, and Rapid KL buses for tourists and locals) or the monthly My50 Travel Pass (unlimited 30-day Rapid KL rides for Malaysian citizens). Tourists arriving by airport train can also pick up the KL TravelPass at the ERL counter.
  • Convenience Stores (7-Eleven, KK Mart, MyNews): Located on Level 1 for quick cash top-ups. Always keep at least RM 5.00 to RM 10.00 balance on your card so the train gates let you in!

Luggage Lockers, Food, ATMs & Prayer Rooms (Surau)

  • Luggage Lockers (Level 1 & Level 2): Need to store your bags while you take the bus to Genting Highlands or the train to Batu Caves? Automated electronic lockers are located on Level 1 (down the corridor next to the LRT/KTM restrooms) and on Level 2 (near the ETS waiting lounge). Small to jumbo lockers cost RM 10 to RM 40 per day.
  • Best Places to Eat: Grab quick fast food (McDonald's, KFC, Starbucks) right on Level 1, walk into Nu Sentral Mall for air-conditioned restaurants and a huge food court, or exit down to Brickfields (Little India) on Jalan Tun Sambanthan for incredible banana leaf rice, roti canai, and teh tarik!
  • ATMs, Money Changers & Surau: Bank ATMs sit along Level 1 near the airport train gates, clean Muslim prayer rooms (Surau) are located on Level 2 and inside Nu Sentral, and the best currency exchange rates are found on the Lower Ground (LG) floor of Nu Sentral Mall.
