My name is Ikbal, and this "Travoltage" for ishabil.com offers a deep dive into the Singapore segment of my recent Southeast Asian adventure. This two-day visit was meticulously planned to maximize sightseeing while utilizing the city-state's incredible public transport system on a strict budget.
The Budget Backbone: Planning Essentials
Visas: Obtained the Singapore visa at the lowest possible rate through an official travel agency.
Accommodation: Due to Singapore's high prices, I opted for the budget-friendly Fragrance Hotel Ruby in Geylang (now part of the Ibis chain). It cost around ₹3,300 per night—expensive for a budget traveler, but necessary in Singapore. The room was small but functional.
Transport: The key to success was the two-day Singapore Tourist Pass. This pass provided unlimited travel on the MRT (metro) and buses, making all movements across the island seamless and affordable.

Day 1: Arrival, Nature, and Neon Lights
✈️ Arrival and The Changi Experience
We flew in from Kuala Lumpur, arriving at Changi Airport around 9:30 AM.
Changi Transit: The airport itself is an attraction. We experienced the internal train system to get to the immigration area. Immigration procedures were quick and simple.
Essential Pass: We purchased the two-day unlimited travel Tourist Pass immediately upon exiting immigration.
π¦ Morning: Jurong Bird Park
We took the MRT straight from the airport. Though our hotel was on the way, we skipped check-in to save precious time, traveling with our luggage. The MRT ride offered a great first impression of Singapore's urban landscape, with massive buildings and even views of the Chinese Park.
Transit: We rode the MRT to the nearest station and took a bus (the station was conveniently located beneath the MRT) to reach the park. We had pre-booked tickets online.
The Park: Spanning 50 acres, the park felt like a massive tropical forest, housing over 12,000 birds from 500 species. Highlights included:
Penguins: My first-ever sighting of penguins in real life.
Avian Diversity: Spotting 18 varieties of the Hornbill, among countless other species.
Interactive Areas: Enjoying the huge walk-in aviary with its artificial waterfall and the chance for birds to land on our hands.
Challenge: Carrying our luggage throughout the park was a bit taxing but worth the early start.
We left the park, bought lunch from a food kiosk near the MRT station, and finally headed to our hotel. After checking in, showering, eating, and resting, we were ready for the evening.
π Evening: Marina Bay Illumination
We took a bus directly toward the central tourist hub, ready to witness the city's spectacular architecture and lights.
Singapore Flyer: Our first stop was near the giant observation wheel (165m high). Though we did not ride, we took time to appreciate its scale and design.
The Iconic View: We walked along the shore of Marina Bay, soaking in the view of the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) complex across the water.
The Merlion: We walked across the Jubilee Bridge to reach the iconic Merlion statue. The area was crowded with tourists, and we joined the fray to capture photos of the Merlion spouting water into the bay.
Architectural Marvels: The view from the Merlion was superb, featuring MBS (the three towers linked by the sky-bridge and pool), the lotus-shaped ArtScience Museum, and the glittering density of the surrounding skyscrapers.
π³ Night: Gardens by the Bay and the Light Show
We crossed the Helix Bridge (280m long)—an architectural marvel in its own right—which led us towards the MBS area and into the Gardens by the Bay.
The Supertrees: The main attraction was the Supertree Grove—18 massive, metal-framed structures (25m to 50m tall) that are essentially vertical gardens.
3 Since it was night, they were stunningly illuminated.Garden Rhapsody: We settled down in the park to watch the Garden Rhapsody Light and Sound Show. The Supertrees sparkled and pulsed with beautiful, changing lights synchronized to music. This short performance was a magical highlight of the trip.
After the show, we took the MRT to Chinatown. We walked through the bustling streets, catching a glimpse of a traditional Chinese dance performance before finally calling it a night.
Day 2: Sentosa Thrills and Cultural Roots
With our check-in complete, Day 2 was dedicated entirely to sightseeing, free from the burden of luggage.
πΏ Morning: Nature and Heritage
Botanic Gardens: We started at the serene Singapore Botanic Gardens. This 183-acre, 156-year-old sanctuary of diverse plant life is a proud UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Little India: We also managed to squeeze in a visit to the vibrant Little India district, experiencing the sights, sounds, and smells of this cultural enclave.
π️ Afternoon: Sentosa Island
Sentosa is Singapore's dedicated island of fun. We utilized the Sentosa Express Train and the internal trams to move between its various attractions:
Marine Life: We visited the S.E.A. Aquarium, marveling at the vast array of marine life, including the sharks and rays.
4 Waxworks: We explored the famous Madame Tussauds Wax Museum.
History and Views: We saw the Images of Singapore show, which chronicles the city-state's history, and ascended the Tiger Tower for incredible aerial views.
Adventure: We also experienced the thrills of the 4D AdventureLand.
Beaches: We spent time exploring the beaches accessible via the internal trams.
The whirlwind adventure concluded in the evening. We used the Singapore Tourist Pass one last time to return to the airport, filled with the incredible memories of a city that perfectly blends nature, futuristic architecture, and efficient urban living.
